Cedar Associates Announces Publication of Key Paper Reporting on the VA Precision Oncology Program

Menlo Park, CA, March 1, 2016.

Cedar Associates LLC announced today the publication of an important paper reporting on a precision medicine program aiming to test US veterans recently diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer on next-generation sequencing panels, provide them individualized treatments, and give them the chance to participate in research. The paper, published in Biomarkers in Cancer, is titled “The VA Point-of-Care Precision Oncology Program: Balancing Access with Rapid Learning in Molecular Cancer Medicine” and is authored by researchers at the VA Massachusetts Veterans Epidemiology Research and Information Center (MAVERIC), the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Stanford University and Cedar Associates. The paper outlines the VA program’s primary objectives and operating principles, the construction of the knowledge base, and the integration and analysis of data. It then describe how the information from the knowledge base can help guide individual decision-making.

John Hornberger, Cedar Associates CEO and President and an author on the paper, commented. “The glacial pace of traditional clinical trial research has not kept up with rapid advancements in technology for biomarker discovery, targeted drug development, and the urgent need for patients faced with life-threatening illness. The VA Point-of-Care Precision Oncology Program (POP) is designed to address this challenge with the promise to effectively apply biomarker testing to identify therapeutic agents that may offer longer survival and improved quality of life than current options. The hope is that that what is learned in POP will show health care systems ways to more effectively use genomic technologies to deliver safer and more effective personalized cancer care.”

John Hornberger’s role in the VA POP demonstrates Cedar’s leadership in advancing precision medicine technologies that make a difference in the lives of cancer patients. Collaborating on innovations like the VA POP is another example of the best in class innovation and performance Cedar offers to clients.
